I’m going to keep this one short. The party negotiated with a few factions of rats, eventually winning them over with some foraged mushrooms. They got quite a lot of loot from the crypts, including some magic items. They found a magical obelisk, and brainstormed ways to get it out. The adventure ended with them being chased out of the dungeon by a mob of over 20 undead.
The highlight of this session, for me, was the rats. Its such a fun time when the random rolls create an interesting random encounter. One of the crypts had some rats feasting on a corpse, and Fjord has the ability to transform into a half rat, allowing him to communicate. He convinced them he wasn’t a threat and managed to loot the room without causing a fight, then left.
Upon leaving, another random encounter was rolled, and more rats showed up. This, I ruled, was another rat faction competing over food (I always find it easiest to go the ecology rout when deciding motivations). Fjord, however, didn’t want his new friends to be in trouble, and went in after the other faction to try to broker peace. He was partially successful, and managed to convince them to wait for an hour, while he gathered enough food to please both groups.
After some more exploration, and with one more dungeon turn before the rats went back to war, the party rolled a random encounter. More rats. Friendly rats. These rats, we decided as a table, were stoner rats that had stumbled upon a patch of psychedelic mushrooms, that they were more than happy to share. The party gathered them up, and brought them to the other rats right on time, and spread the food amongst them.
This left us with a really cool little story, and Fjord got to bring these rats together! Its stuff like this that keeps me coming back! And all this required like, 5 minutes of prep time :)
